Artistic Gymnastics World Championship Launches in Jakarta
(MENAFN) The 53rd Artistic Gymnastics World Championship officially commenced on Sunday at the Indonesia Arena in Jakarta, Indonesia.
This event is groundbreaking as it represents the first occasion that Indonesia, or any Southeast Asian nation, has had the honor of hosting the championship.
This year’s competition is scheduled to continue until October 25 and features elite gymnasts representing more than 70 nations.
Unlike previous editions, there will be no team contests, placing exclusive emphasis on individual routines and performances.
“We are proud that for the first time in history, 427 of the world’s finest athletes have come together in one arena, right here in Jakarta, Indonesia.
A total of 77 countries will participate in the championship,” declared Ita Yuliati, chairman of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), during the opening ceremony held on Sunday.
For several competitors who are participating under a neutral flag, this championship is their first significant international event in four years, and for some athletes, it marks their debut at a World Championship.
Angelina Melnikova, an Olympic medalist and champion of both World and European titles, who had not competed in a major event since 2021, expressed her amazement at the design of this year’s championship and praised the warmth and friendliness of the people involved in the competition.
Lyudmila Roshina, the recipient of the Strongest Athletes Cup and a national champion, shared her excitement about attending her first World Championship.
She described feeling “amazing” and said she is delighted to be part of the event. “The atmosphere is wonderful, and my mood couldn’t be better,” she commented just before the opening ceremony.
