Indonesia’s Mount Semeru in East Java Eurpts Early Saturday

(MENAFN) Indonesia’s Mount Semeru in East Java erupted early Saturday morning, propelling dense ash and high-temperature clouds up to 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from the crater, according to reports from state-run media.

The first eruption was recorded at 5:54 a.m. local time (2254GMT Friday). An official from the Semeru Observation Post stated that the searing clouds moved southeast in the direction of the Besuk Kobokan river basin.

Volcanic ash spread toward northern and northeastern areas, forming a thick gray plume that ascended roughly 2,000 meters (6,561 feet) above the volcano’s summit.

A second eruption occurred at 7:25 a.m., generating another ash column that climbed 1,500 meters above the peak. Seismic instruments detected notable tremors accompanying both eruptions, indicating heightened volcanic activity.

Situated between Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java province, Semeru remains under Level III Alert, the country’s second-highest warning classification.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has advised residents and tourists to refrain from entering a 13-kilometer (8-mile) radius in the southeastern sector of the crater, particularly near the Besuk Kobokan river.

Officials further cautioned against approaching riverbanks within 500 meters due to the potential for lava flows and the expansion of hot clouds, which could extend as far as 17 kilometers from the summit.

Indonesia lies within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and is home to more than 120 active volcanoes.

Authorities have not reported any significant damage in the immediate aftermath of the eruptions.
