UN Chief Denounces Killing of Peacekeeper in Lebanon
“This is just one of a number of recent incidents that have jeopardized the safety & security of peacekeepers,” Guterres wrote on the US social media platform X. He urged all parties to respect international law and ensure the protection of UN personnel and property.
UNIFIL reported that the peacekeeper was “tragically” killed when a projectile struck a UN position near the southern Lebanese village of Adchit al-Qusayr. Another peacekeeper was critically injured, though the origin of the projectile remains unknown. An investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
The incident comes amid ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon following a cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2, which prompted Israeli airstrikes and a ground offensive. Regional tensions have escalated further since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on February 28, resulting in over 1,340 deaths, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran has responded with drone and missile strikes against Israel and US bases in Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries, causing casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
