7.6-Magnitude Quake Leaves Woman Dead in Indonesia
The victim — a 70-year-old woman from Minahasa regency in North Sulawesi — died after falling debris from a collapsing structure struck her during the violent tremors, according to the local search and rescue team based in Manado, the provincial capital.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) confirmed Thursday that the quake's epicenter was located in waters southeast of Bitung City, North Sulawesi, where residents reported intense shaking lasting between 10 and 20 seconds. Widespread panic ensued as people fled their homes into the streets.
Two offshore aftershocks have since been recorded, the BNPB added, with preliminary assessments pointing to light to moderate structural damage in Ternate. Social media footage circulating online painted a more vivid picture — collapsed ceilings, debris-strewn floors, and visibly warped building frames.
Heightening fears further, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency warned the quake carried the potential to trigger a tsunami affecting North Maluku and North Sulawesi, issuing formal alerts at both "alert" and "caution" levels.
Authorities have since urged local governments to initiate evacuations, with coastal residents specifically directed to move away from beaches and riverbanks and adhere strictly to official guidance as the situation develops.
