Strong Earthquake Rocks Northern Molucca Sea in Indonesia

(MENAFN) A strong earthquake registering 7.4 on the Richter scale struck the northern Molucca Sea early Thursday, according to reports.

The US Tsunami Warning System issued alerts indicating that waves could affect areas within 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of the epicenter, potentially impacting the coasts of Indonesia, Philippines, and Malaysia.

The quake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) and was centered 127 kilometers (79 miles) west-northwest of Ternateari of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), reported that teams in Manado, Bitung, and Ternate are inspecting buildings to assess damage and identify additional casualties. Muhari stated, “We are still collecting data to confirm the number of victims and the damage in each location. There have indeed been earlier reports of casualties from the Regional Disaster Management Agency, but we will provide updated details later regarding the exact figures…Our teams are still working in the field."

Reports indicated that one person died from falling debris in Manado, with media footage showing damaged structures. Residents described fleeing their homes in panic, and while some neighborhoods did not suffer structural damage, items were knocked over and power outages occurred.

Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone where tectonic plates meet, resulting in frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
