Massive Jakarta Fire Leaves 620 Homeless Overnight

(MENAFN) A devastating fire tore through a densely populated neighborhood in Indonesia’s capital late Monday, destroying more than 300 homes and forcing hundreds of residents from their properties, according to media.

The blaze broke out in Jakarta’s Kemayoran district and rapidly spread across the residential area, leaving at least 620 people without shelter. Local authorities reported that 330 households were impacted by the incident.

“There are approximately 620 people who lost their homes,” agency head Syarifudin said.

Emergency crews encountered major obstacles while battling the flames, including narrow and crowded access routes, large numbers of spectators, and residents attempting to save personal belongings as the fire intensified.

Officials from the Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency said firefighters managed to bring the fire under control at approximately 11:30 p.m. local time on Monday before fully extinguishing it at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday. The response involved 35 fire engines and 175 personnel.

Authorities have launched efforts to assess the extent of the damage and determine assistance measures for families displaced by the disaster.
